1 The National Language Movement and State-Building in Modern China

There was a multi-level kink in the pattern of growth of National Language Movement and state-building in modern China. As part of the latter, the National Language Movement serviced for state-building, and clearly demonstrated some basic features of it as well. From the perspectives of National Language Movement, we can trace two state-building clues, which were nationalism and modernism. As a means of “save the nation from subjugation and ensure its survival”, the National Language Movement sought to construct national territory through words and language. Of course, the Movement also took part in the international competition for culture. At home, the Movement was committed to improve people’s mental and intellectual accomplishment, which was not only one of the aims of the country’s national unity, but also was the prerequisite to the people’s liberty fighting. In addition, the Movement also showed that the modernity was Chinese state-building value.

38 A Social Observation of the Educational Development in Chinese Rural Setting:From “Bring Literacy to Countryside” to “Take Literacy Away Countryside”

In the past hundred years, Chinese rural education has experienced a complex process from “bring literacy to countryside” to “take literacy away countryside”, which seems opposite superficially however behavior consistent essentially. Going further, both of them are control strategies and operate means of “Developmentalism” modern logic and “Nationalism” political logic in different stages. To understand the root cause from “bring to” to “take away”, it is needed to consider the possibility back in multilevel elements of Chinese countryside changes and transformation during hundred years, as well as analysis the necessity deep in difficulties of local educational development in daily reality. Then, break the theoretic swing between “urbanization” and “localism” in Chinese rural education under the contemporary context of post “take literacy away countryside”, and ultimately create a rural-urban educational balanced road under the new urbanization context.

83 On the Resignation Affairs of Cai Yuanpei from Peking University
Li Chunping
Cai Yuanpei resigned from Peking University for many times during his tenure of the president, but his resignation was rejected again and again. This paper explores these resignation affairs, and by analyzing Cai's painful choice between the scholarship and achievement, investigates into Cai' s ideas, deeds, and effects as a president of a modern Chinese university. It also sheds reflection on the connection between the academy and the politics in the history of Chinese modern education.

The Republic of China Women's Art Education is an important part of history of education in modern China. However, the scholars of educational history have paid few attention on this important subject, and the art research mostly focus on the painter's art history. This article will concentrate on the identity change of this female group who studied or taught at Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and the role of art education in their personal development, and discover, with subtle women writing, their social and personal fate.
