The Pathway to Excellence: Social Capital and the Growth of Top students

The past decades witnessed the rapid expansion of higher education worldwide. The great leap forward of Chinese higher education and the increase of college students’ population raised great concerns of researchers on the issues of higher education quality. At the core of the quality issue should be the development of college students which is the central task of colleges and universities. Although there has been much research about student development in colleges and universities, there is still a lack of research which looks at the patterns of social relations that students embodied and its impact on students’ development. This study tries to examine the impact of social relations that students embodied on their growth through using the lens of social capital. Through in-depth interviewing with 17 top students in E university of S city, the author found that students can obtain different emotional and instrumental resources through different kind of social network. The findings have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, it distinguishes different networks and their respective potentials for students’ development. Furthermore, it also reminds us that colleges and universities should help students to get access to more social capital through creating network-abundant campus.

Contention,Creation and Game Playing of Resources in Educational Field ——The Evolution of Education in A Small Town South of Zhejiang Province & A School Story

In the early days of this small town, In front of the extreme shortage of educational resources, people contend with each other, and creative inspiration is stimulated in this conflicted and balanced process. Besides, the lack of educational resources continuously influences the way of living, and promote the local people to change their views of education as well as their ways concerning choosing education. In the long period of historical transformation, there have been some school-running cases with strong characteristics. The runners of the school adopt series of strategies with local features to resolve many problems with local characteristics. It is just in this process that they overcome the difficulties through interaction, and also in this process, local customs, culture and living style influence people’s choice and measures dealing with the shortage of education resources. These are projected onto a businessman in the school act.A local merchant from a family background of school running take some measures with local characteristics to deal with the shortage of education resources. He encounters many problems in running the school because of the influence from local culture, customs and systems, and he resolves these problems by adopting some strategies adapting to the cultural psychology. During this dramatic change, relative people project their opinions from respective cultural stance, the reasons behind is corresponding to the cultural environment of the town.

Memory, History and Role: Wang Lijuan and Her Schoolmates Graduated from Normal School

With the adjustment and change of the teacher education policy, normal school for cultivating primary school teacher has been fading away from people’s sights and memories. As one of the melodies of Chinese educational chorus, what’s the normal school left for its students and what’ the fruits it left for the fundamental education in Chinese rural area? In other words, in the history and reality, what kinds of the roles that the normal school education and normal school students has played, and have these roles carried completely out their performance? All the questions are worthy of reflection. The paper focus on the investigation of the real lives of Wang Lijuan, who entered into the normal school in certain province of the center part of China at the end of 1980’s and three years later engaged in teaching position as a primary school teacher in rural area, and of her schoolmates, including their work, study, marriage, social intercourse and so on. The author tries to describe a real situation about the education in normal school and the real experiences of its students through the insight of objects’ memories and the documents recorded in the national polices in primary teacher education and training. Based on this, the research tries to find the answers for the above questions based on a glimpse of the interrelationship of between normal school and its graduates and national policy, social economy.

A Narrative Study on Career Development of Graduates from Preschool normal school——— An Investigation on Sixteen 1990’s Graduates in a Middle China Province

The preschool normal school used to be the main training institute for preschool teachers, and the graduates are an important force of the current preschool teaching staff in china. Research on career development of such a group can not only provide us with information about their current situation and future professional development, but also give us a better understanding of research on career development of Chinese preschool teacher and their working demands. In the meanwhile , by the “deep depict “of career development process of the sixteen 1990’s graduates in a Middle China province , the study reveals the living state of this group in the context of social change. Moreover, it expands the vision of this field and has enriched the research field of career development. Therefore, 16 Graduates from preschool normal school in 1990’s are enrolled in the study. Through the narrative inquiry method, the study aims at revealing the real, complex and diversified instructional practice and working out a whole picture of these graduates’ career development in the context of social change. Through description of the process of career development by stages, this study gives prominence to critical events and confusion the graduates encountered in the process of their development, which a whole picture of the interviewees’ career development processes are reproduced. Based on time and context, the conclusions demonstrate the career development process of 16 interviewees in over past ten years. Based on the narratives of 16 interviewees’ career development and theories of existentialism, female ethics and social role, the study tries to make discussion and reflection of career development of 1990s preschool normal school graduates from three perspectives: Individual self-consciousness, the feminine special characters as well as the realization of self-value.
