Abstract��How did west modern science enter Chinese culture and construct the scientific idea? It’s not a part of the Enlightenment project of modernity for science’s entrance to and construction in China, but a passive reaction in culture to the cultural invasion of the western missionaries, especially to the challenge in the aspect of the military. The understanding in science of Chinese is based on their choice of the cultural or practical reason, and out of the utilitarian need of “��������”. Science is adopted primarily as a toolbox, by means of which people hope to solve the immediate problem directly. Thus, people’s understanding in science is not based on the social context where it grows. It is still a problem to establish the scientific culture in China, which will hamper the improvement of the scientific literacy of Chinese people.
