Abstract��Cai Yuanpei resigned from Peking University for many times during his tenure of the president, but his resignation was rejected again and again. This paper explores these resignation affairs, and by analyzing Cai's painful choice between the scholarship and achievement, investigates into Cai' s ideas, deeds, and effects as a president of a modern Chinese university. It also sheds reflection on the connection between the academy and the politics in the history of Chinese modern education.
