Abstract General education has been an important issue in world higher education. Although it is generally agreed that undergraduate students should receive general education, it is not clear as to what kind of model should be adopted or how to implement it. This study, based on relevant theories and historical experiences of universities at home and abroad in implementing general education, conducts a 4-year longitudinal study of the Yuanpei Program of Peking University. It aims to answer the question: How to implement general education in comprehensive research universities in China? This report mainly consists of an analysis of the definition of general education and other related concepts, the feasibility of localization of general education in China, the curriculum design in comprehensive research universities, and necessary institutional support for general education. At the end of the report, a tentative general education model is proposed for comprehensive research universities in China, based on relevant theories, historical development and, above all, the findings from the longitudinal case study of Yuanpei Program. |
