The Unanticipated Consequence of "Son Does Not Follow in His Father’s Footsteps"--A Narrative Study on the Growth of Rural Kids in High Academic Achievement

Abstract A group of rural kids who born after China’s Reform and Opening-up get access to the life of class traveler through keep climbing on the ladder of education. This paper defines these rural kids as “college material”. This research tries to interpret the unanticipated consequences in the process of getting high academic achievements and class travelling. In the process of climbing up academic ladder, “college materials” produce a complex structure of feelings which focuses on rural background, results in constraint body and mind and extends a relationship structure with both love and hate. The cultural production of underclass is very complex. A dark side accompanies with high academic achievements. Family experience is very important in exploring schooling experience of “college material” and their cultural production.
